History
Agra’s history is deeply rooted in the Mughal dynasty, but it has also been shaped by numerous other rulers throughout time. Sikandar Lodhi of the Delhi Sultanate founded Agra in the 16th century and Babur (founder of the Mughal Dynasty) introduced Persian-styled gardens to the city. Emperor Akbar built the iconic Agra Fort while Jahangir beautified it with palaces and gardens. The Taj Mahal was built under Shahjahan who marked a zenith for Mughal architecture. After this period, Jats, Marathas and eventually British took over control of Agra until India gained independence from Britain in 1947. This rich history can be seen through its many historical monuments that remain standing today.

Fatehpur Sikri is a unique blend of architectural excellence and religious beliefs. It was built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar to honor Sheikh Salim Chisti, whose prediction of the birth of an heir came true while he was visiting Sikri. To commemorate this prophecy, Akbar constructed Jama Masjid – a stunning mosque that still stands today – as well as three palaces for each of his favorite wives: one Hindu, one Muslim, and one Christian. An Indo-Islamic masterpiece, Fatehpur Sikri appears especially beautiful during sunset hours.
Agra is a beautiful city that can be visited throughout the year, but certain times of the year offer better weather and more pleasant experiences. From November to March, you’ll experience mild temperatures and fewer crowds. If you want to witness the Taj Mahal in its rain-washed splendor then August to October is an ideal time for your visit as this marks monsoon season in Agra. For those looking for less crowded streets and discounted hotel rates, April through July are great months to plan your trip since it’s summertime in Agra.
